Students' Game Plans

I think that teaching students to use technology is key. They need to learn these skills in order to survive in today's technology-rich society. Lately I have been creating and following a GAME plan to better my own technology skills. So why not involve my students in a similar process? I think that allowing my students to develop their own plans will help them to initiate their own learning. By doing this, students are able to enhance skills that they need to. If I were to pick a certain skill to work with students in class and a few students already have it mastered, then it is pretty much pointless.

That is a great idea to have the students involved as well. They are able to get a sense of ownership. It will also help prepare them in the educational career to set goals and achieve them.

  2. Katie,

It is very important to teach students these skills in order to become competitive in the work force once they are older. I also think that students would be very interested in setting goals to become more efficient with technology, especially if they see that their teacher is doing the same thing.

You make a good point by allowing students to pick their own goal to work on. I would be hesitant, at least at first, to do this because I teach younger students. I believe that if we work on this together, we can brainstorm and share ideas. Once they become more familiar with this process, they may be able to complete this process independently. If you teach older students, I would definitely let them choose standards that are of interest to them. It will make them more interested and focus on skills that will help them be more successful with technology.

  3. Hi Katie,

You are creating self-directed learners. They know their needs so by putting decisions in their hands they are taking responsibility for their own learning. Well done!

  4. Katie,
I think it would be a great idea to involve students in making their own GAME plan. As educators we work constantly to have students become life long learners - I think incorporating technology would be key. What types of skills will you focus on?

  5. Grade2teacher,
You have a good point. I think that I might limit their choices and not make it so open-ended. I might give them 3 or 4 choices of things to work on in technology and conference with them to decide what is best for them.

    Addy Robin,
I think that I will focus on very basic and useful skills such as email and word processing. My kiddos have very few skills in the areas of technology.

  6. Katie,
I have found that the GAME Plan idea is a wonderful strategy to use for me personally as well. As I have used it and became more confident with it, I am excited to start having my students use it. Great work with your blog throughout this course. Best of luck!
