Implementing NETS-T Standards: My Game Plan

As a teacher it is important to implement new technologies into teaching. Fortunately, there are standards to follow in order to do this as effectively as possible. Personally, I would like to implement some more technology into my classroom. To do that, I would like to follow a couple of the standards from the International Society for Technology in Education. The two standards I would like follow are: 2A- which involves using digital tools to promote creativity and learning in relevant learning experiences; and 3B- which involves collaborating with students, parents, and community members by using digital tools for student success.

To implement standard 2A, my plan is to create a slide show about proper ways to act in a restaurant. When teaching students with special needs (which is what I do) it is important to incorporate social learning experiences as much as possible. To get their interest, I will incorporate actual photos and/or video clips of myself or of another staff member to actively demonstrate how to act in a restaurant. In order to monitor my progress, I will set a timeline and try to stick to it. To evaluate my progress, I will keep track of what I do and see if I adhere to the timeline. Then I will see how my students respond to it and evaluate my success on that.

To implement standard 3B- I will try to keep up with my teacher website, which I am not very good at. I would like to update or add things to my website at least twice a month and include interesting things that my parents might get involved in. To monitor this, I will simply set two days each month in which I will make changes to my website and I will indicate if I accomplished it or not.

  1. Katie,

I think it is a wonderful idea to create a slideshow that will teach students about proper ways to act in a restaurant. As your students become more familiar with ways to act properly, they could help create the video clips to use with students for the next year. Students always seem to enjoy seeing things that involve your peers and this is something students can work to achieve in your class.

I also agree that it is important to collaborate with students, peers, and parents. A website is a great way to do that! I plan on working to create my class website this summer, but I will have to update mine for frequently because I would like to include spelling words for my students/parents. I think the key is to make sure we keep our websites up-to-date in order to keep individuals coming back to read the happenings in your classroom. It is good that you are setting aside time in your schedule to make the changes to your site so that you already have it planned. Great ideas!

  2. As far as 3b is concerned, I have been having an issue with this as well. This past year I have found it very helpful to have a student help with this. I have a student who is top notch and is working with me on an independant study basis. He pretty much does whatever it is that I need him to do.

At the start of the secon semester I asked him to take a look at what I have and see how it could be improved. After all the website is designed for the parents and students. I then had him start adding materials, dates, projects, rubrics, etc. The only portion that I don't have him do is student grades.

  3. I really like your idea about using a slide show to teacher proper restaurant behavior. This is something that my fifth graders would benifit from. When I bring treats into the room I have to remind students about manners each time. If they had a slide show to reference so they could see a visual, this may be something I won't have to to each time.

    Great Post!

  4. Hi Katie,

Is it part of your job to teach students to behave in a restaurant or is it the job of his/her parents? I would be very careful about this because some parents get angry and upset when teachers encroach upon what they feel is their responsibility. Can you change the activity to how to act in the school cafeteria or the school library? Parents cannot get upset about that. Students really enjoy seeing teachers act out examples of both appropriate and inappropriate actions. If this is a podcast, you can pause it and have students discuss the choices after each example.

Do parents use your site? None of the parents in my school used my website, so I gave up for this year. I will try again next year...

  5. Thanks to all who responded. Here are a few responses to each of you:
Grade2teacher- Thanks for the idea of using pictures of my students to add to the presentation about restaurant behavior for students in the future. I think they would really enjoy that. I also think it is a good idea to include spelling words into you website.

Miclichner- I think that it is great to use your students for your website. I'm sure it is helpful to you while adding a little extra practice for your student. Also, good call on not allowing him to help with posting grades. I'm sure parents would have a problem with that. If I had students that I could do this with, I would.

Travis- I'm glad you liked the idea of using restaurant manners in a slide show presentation. I hope you can use the idea and that it will be helpful for you and your fifth graders

LynneK- I understand your concern that it might anger parents to teach their children restaurant behavior. Here's my take on it. My students know very little about interacting in social siturations. It isn't because the parents don't try to teach them, its that the kids just don't get it. I would basically be reinforcing what parents have already attempted to teach their kids...just basic social behaviors such as using please and thank you and ordering from a menu. I don't see that any of those things would be offensive, but if they are I will gladly change to cafeteria or something like that.

Thanks all for your comments. You've given me a lot to think about!
